I guess the whole point in conversation is to convey information. When talking about a subjective experience, one wishes to convey one's own experiences as well as possible, so as to gain the desired empathy and understanding of the other person/s. By using similies and metaphors, we can paint vivid pictures that help people to understand far more clearly. For example, if I were to say, "it really hurt" then you understand I felt some form of pain and discomfort, and it was unpleasant for me, but it remains utterly personal, as I do not know what quantifies "really hurt". If I were to say "it hurt like an elephant stamping repeatedly on my head" you have a better understanding.
Also, if I say, "he lay in a pool of crimson goodbyes" it expresses a sentiment to go with the image, Not only am I being creative by seeing the world in that way, and finding the words to explain it, but I am very clearly telling you how I desire you to react. It's essentially a tool for better manipulation of your audience, because you paint a clear picture in their minds.

well, if we didnt, we'd all sound like a bunch of robots giving factual information...metaphor is used in the act of playing on words, it adds spice. Its like the difference between a boiled soggy veggie, and a spicy aromatic dish. It is definitely an artistic expression which requires some form of wit and a good sense of humour. Being a linguistic specialist, its easy to hear from someone's speech the sort of person they are, a few lines can say a lot about a person, but then, they could be putting on an act. Metaphors are used in poetry, come on lines, music, plays, films, everyday language, i can't imagine life without it. What has more effect...telling someone they are very very foolish or saying "you ***" or "you swine"...?

Sometimes a methaphor is quick and easy and will easily express the idea/concept to the listener with very few words and in a way that will make him/her immediately grasp what the speaker means.
Maybe it isn't to make it easier for the listener as much as it is to make it more convenient for the speaker.

A metaphor is a masquerade dance; a hidden meaning, but all the clues are there.
A metaphor is a super-hero; a colorful costume dressing up a mild-mannered everyday meaning.

Well I'm an analogy man myself, as adults have problems absorbing knowledge unless they can relate it to something they already know. So by using an analogy, many more adult get it. I think metaphors are similar
