What happened to all those beautiful thick white women? Betty Grable and Marilyn Monroe both had what people today would call "black girl butts and hips". How come today in the media it's only acceptable for colored women to have curves but if a white gal has a shape she's called fat? White people used to embrace curves too, so how come now it's a sin to look feminine? Scarlett Johanssen and Ashley Judd are the only two modern white actresses I can think of that have gorgeous feminine figures. The rest of them have cute faces but boring bodies. I don't get it. I don't know about you but my idea of a beautiful white women looks more like this:

and less like this:

Well that's my opinion:-)

They are still around and I think that there is a shift albeit slow in the media to celebrating curves. Charlotte Church, Kelly Brooke etc are both women whose curves are celebrated. Lets hope that this slow trend continues and that women dont feel so pressurised to be thin.

It is very difficult for a women in todays society to have any weight on them without being accused of overeating. My mom has a gorgeous curvy body but her self image is so low because the media tells her it is not attractive. That is why there are so many instances of eating disorders in hollywood. Between Rosanne and Nicole Richie and not much in between. I wish figures like that of Ashley Judd and Jennifer Lopez was more widely accepted by females. Most believe skinnier is better. I just answered a question not too long ago that involved a women being self conscious about being pregnant because she considered herself fat and ugly. I think this mentality is so very sad. I believe we are all beautiful just the way we are. I love the new Dove ads. It really focuses on everybody is beautiful mentality and to love yourself and the skin you are born in. Unfortunetly with all the diet fads and all, people believe the pictuer of health and beauty is to be thin. Therefore it is all over our TVs, Movies and Magazines. So sad.

I think it has more to do with the fashion designers in Europe and New York who in the 80's and 90's turned to the ulthra-thin curvelss ideal for the body. Now since this was affecting the caucasian society more, as most of the models ( except for a few black models like Naomi Campbell) where white. The roel models for colored women were not models but normal woemn.

There are women of all races and sizes in the media, you just have to look for them. Its harder to notice them because the media is to consumed with who had 'gained weight' (aka the curvy women) and who is 'anorexic' (aka the women who lose a few pounds and the ones who go overboard). Its a mixed group, but the focus is always on the thinner and sickly celebs.
P.S. Scarlet Johanssen is not what I would call thick.

Totally!!! A friend of mine has a book of old pin ups from the 1940's and 50's and their figures are much different than the "pin ups" you see today. Everything is airbrushed to perfection now as well.
On a similar topic...I've noticed sizes of things seem to be going up in number. If I want what would normally be a size 10 in jeans I have to buy a size 12 or 14 now even though the inches haven't changed. What the heck?

This is an interesting turn of events...for years (even today), the white / Euro-centric view was the one that set the standard by which beauty is measured. I guess the media has finally figured out that all beautiful women in the world are not white, but come in all shapes, hues and races.
Welcome to my world.

It's sad but true and the media plays a big part in it. If you are thick you're face is all over National Enquirer or Star with a headline that you've gained weight. If you lose weight they say you have an eating disorder. God bless the women who won't let that dictate how they look at themselves.

I don't think so in any respect, even taking the example of Kim K whom is neither white european nor could be said to have black features as no human feature is exclusive to any one population strata

Scarlett Johanssen? Please, she is thin thin thin. Besides there are lots of white women with curves: Drew Barrymore, Angelina Jolie, Jennifer Lopez, Kate Winslet, Kelly Clarkson, Cynthia Nixon, etc etc. Oh I guess I forgot that J-Lo is latino but you get my drift. Just because more people are thin doesn't mean that women with curves aren't considered beautiful. Angelina Jolie is considered one of the sexiest women in Hollywood right now and she has curves.
