Washinton DC (district of Columbia) isn't in a state. it is it's own district. a long time ago when the states were fighting over who would have the capitol they decided to make a seperate place for Washington so that no state could claim it. It is boardered by Maryland and Virginia.

Washington DC is a federal district and not a state. The land taken to create Washington DC was part of Maryland.

We KNOW that D.C. is a DISTRICT and NOT a state! We just want to know what state surrounds it! Whew! Ease up. The passion that this ignites is amazing! No one is trying to insult anyone here. It's an innocent question that may not have been asked exactly correctly, but I'll bet that most of the people who got so indignant about this, really know what the question means. Sheesh - there are bigger problems to get on your high horses about. It's not just this feed either. I started searching other places and found the same attitudes. It makes me wonder if the people who live around Washington, D.C. and others really think that there are that many ignorant people who don't know our history and government regarding our capitol. I've never seen more unnecessary history/government lessons in my life! Hopefully someone was helped by them, but there are still hundreds of people waiting for some nice person to say Maryland - it's "surrounded" by Maryland.

Yes, there is a state in the USA called 'Washington' and there is another place called 'Washington DC' where DC stands for 'District of Columbia'. They are on opposite sides of that country.

No state. Washington DC is in the District of Columbia. DC has no senator. That's why you see on many license plates the phrase "Taxation withouth representation".

Washington D.C. is not in a state, it is its own territory. However it is right next to Virginia.

None. The land was taken from the state of Maryland; originally there was also some land from the state of Virginia. But that land was returned to the state long ago.
