What does it take to be a counselor, guidance counselor, substance abuse counselor, something like that? Not any kind of psychologist or anything, just a straight up advisor?

I am not quite sure if there is a difference in meaning between the US and the UK here, but in the UK a cousellor should not be "advising" anyone.

Counselling, whether Gestalt, Person Centred, CBT, TA or any of the other types is about trying to empower the client to make their own decisions. It is the role of the counsellor to help them feel supported and to explore any "blind spots" that may be present.

So, please can you clarify what you want to do, counsellors and advisors are truly NOT the same folks. Alas because you can only answer a question once, it will be for someone else to pick up the next answer :)
