We live in Atlanta, GA. Our yard is almost all weeds, and we dont' know what kind of grass we have. How do we find out what grass we have? Do we rip out the weeds in the fall and plant seeds or do we wait until spring? Help!?

Kill everything that is there and start over. Once all the weeds are gone, water the dirt as much as possible. This will make any weeds in the ground come up and then you kill those. Once you have it all killed off, lay your sod. It's more expensive than seeding, but you get the instant results. If you have kids and dogs and the lawn will get a lot of use, I recommend Marathon 1. The most important thing is to kill all the weeds first. You don't want them coming back after you new lawn is in. It takes time, so be patient. The more you water the dirt, the better. Just soak the sucker. Good luck.

There is no easy way out just hard work. weed kill the lot with a systemic weedkiller. Do not pull out any weeds but let them die in place. Should take about a month, but you are not using your lawn now anyway. Dig the plot over remove any roots, firm, level and either sow your seed or lay turf. Do not roll the ground as this will compact the soil and could give you moss problems. If you re-seed you should have a nice lawn for the spring. If you have any doubts then go to your local garden centre and ask for advice.

It relies upon on what form of grass you decide on on and what area you reside in. My dad, husband, and myself only finished sowing seed approximately an hour in the past. We sowed Marshall Rye grass seed. that is fantastically and eco-friendly interior the iciness and is chilly climate tolerant (yet we live interior the South). that is quite hardy, even though it purely lasts for that 12 months; you may plant it lower back next 12 months. i think of that is worth it although. a great sort of folk use it to assist with erosion in the process the iciness months. All you do is, unfold the seed on suited of the floor and enable it improve! no longer something to it! One guy informed me that he believed it may improve on concrete! (ha,ha,ha)

best idea - look around your neighborhood and check out the lawns - talk to the people that are working in their yard - that way you get to know your neighbors and learn about maintaining your yard! Also, Home Depot/Lowes is a great place to start.
