It's the National Anthem, folks. Everyone is supposed to sing it, not just stand there mute listening to it sung (mostly badly) by a B-level pop singer who's just trying to show off his/her vocal calesthenics. What's the benefit of this and why don't they just play a recording of it, put the words on the Jumbotron or whatever it's called and all the Americans in the stands sing their own National Anthem. I'm trying to imagine an event where they play the French National Anthem and no one sings but a performer. It's disrespectful and silly.

Okay, the question is: If we are all patriotic Americans, why can't we all sing the National Anthem together?

There are some horrible versions of the National Anthem, and I am not sure anyone has sung it better than Marvin Gaye. His rendition might not please you, but it's the best I have heard. Are you aware that the music to the National Anthem is an old English drinking song? Considering it's origins, I think is acceptable for singers to improvise a little, as long as it is done with respect.

human beings have forgotten what the words quite recommend. correct after 9/11, it felt more effective like an anthem back (notwithstanding if there became a pop celeb making a music it). it really is a shame we want yet another "9/11" to keep in mind that.

Why are Republicans afraid of change?
I thought there were some great performances of it, especially by Ozzie Smith's son in one of the games (4 maybe?).

What does singing have to do with patriotism?

You are incorrect. I do not have to sing it, and I do not. It is not disrespectful. It is hard to sing.
