Should we continue to define ourselves as African American, Asian American, Mexican American, German Americna and so forth? Or should we simply call ourselves Americans? Most of us have not immigrated from another country but were born here in these United States, doesn't this mean we are Americans and nothing else? (Just currious!!!)

I think it is just a way of honoring your culture.
Mexican, German, & Asian all have very different cultures. It is nice to know of yours and be proud of it.

If you are born here your nationallity is American.
But your ethnicity is whatever your background is are like asian, african, french, russian, Europeean german, spanish, middle eastern or whatever.

But its a bit confusing.for me. Because I was born here. But raised in sweden and in France all my life and then move back to the us when I was 16. And I am part african, thai, chinese and frecn créole. So I just tell people my race and that I'm origianlly from France.

Oh yeah everyone in america were once immigrants.

I think if you are a new citizen of the US - yes...as you were born in one country and now live and are a citizen of another, if not then I suppose it's just up to the individual if they want to do that or not. BUT..I do heatedly believe that it's GOOD to know where you grandparents or parents...great-grandparents...ANCESTORS came from...to learn about your heritage - learn and understand what your ancestors did and sacrificed to come to this country. Some were brought as slaves ..others came to escape slavery...others came to escape disease and famine..others came so that their children and children's children could have a better life...no matter how we got here - we got here. Understanding and knowing our heritage is to honor our own family members and Ancestors.
I suppose to some they attach their heritage to 'American' when describing themselves to honor their ancestors & to show pride in their family history. It doesn't bother me at all..I don't see it disrespectful of America...I see it as respecting their roots. To each their own. I think we should ALL be able to define our own SELF anyway we choose...it's America...right?
