it depends on what you consider "2004"

on 01/01/04 (2003 regular season), the USC trojans beat michigan in the rose bowl for a share of the national championship. LSU was the other team.

on 01/03/05 (2004 regular season), the USC trojans beat oklahoma in the orange bowl to win the undisputed national championship.

LSU was the BCS Champion in 2004, and USC was the the champion in the Coaches Poll.

2004 season, 2005 Bowls, USC won the BCS Championship, but they were in no way the undisputed National Champion, because there was a 13-0 Auburn Team who beat 4 teams ranked in the Top 10 that year. The fact that they never played is a disgrace to College Football. How a team can go undefeated through the SEC and Championship game and not even get a chance to play for the Title is crazy. No matter what anyone says, Auburn had a share of the National Title that year, after all, who beat them?????

Southern California in the 2004 National Championship.

In the 2003 National Championship, USC was ranked number 1 in the polls and number-2-ranked Louisiana State won the Sugar Bowl. Had LSU and USC met in the Sugar Bowl, there would have been only one champion.

Yeah, that year date thing can be confusing, with them playing the actual championship game in January of the next year.
