Yes.. they are meant to be used as a stand alone method.. each specific Birth Control pill has its own percentage rate of effective ness... NONE are 100% though...
The only 100% way is to not have sex.. not even Condoms are 100% effective.

Now having siad all that.. there are factors that can make a birth control pill LESS effective and Increase the odds of pregnancy even IF you are taking it as prescribed!
Certain Antibiotics, like Rifampin, Penicillins, and Tetracyclines can all lower the effectiveness of the birthcontrol pill.. This is especially true for women who are using the new lower dose types of pills.Best rule of thumb is if you are going to take an antibiotic while on Birth control... use additional prevention like a condom while you are on antibiotics and for a full 10 days after your last dose.

During perfect use (which is taking the pill every day at the same time etc. etc.) the pill has an effectiveness of 99%. With average users (those that sometimes miss a pill or take pills at various times) the pill is 95% effective. To increase the effectiveness of contraceptives.. try wearing a condom. This basically makes it a zero chance if she has taken her oral contraceptives in a consistent and responsible fashion. (*sigh* "Though there is always a possibility of pregnancy) And you are not alone with your worries.. I've been there, done that. Have some trust and realize that reported cases of pregnancy on the pill are due to incorrect use or a rare case such as a reaction with medication or rejection by the body.

Taken properly (at about the same time EVERY DAY, and no skipped pills) they are 99%+ effective at preventing pregnancy. Yes, if you're talking about pregnancy alone, they can be used as a stand-alone method; you do have to understand that they have a failure rate, though. If you don't take them at about the same time everyday, or you skip pills or you fail to use a backup method when taking antibiotics, the failure rate may increase sharply. I've been on them on and off for 20 years with no unintended pregnancies (of course, you'll also hear from women who got pregnant on the pill... they either fall into the 1% failure rate or something they did increased their chances.... there just are no guarantees.)

For the most part they are 98% effective, but only if taken properly. You have to take them every day without fail and they should be taken at the same time every day. Any type of antibiotic will decrease the effectiveness, so you would need to use an alternate method as well, if on an antibiotic medication. Hope this helps.

We used the pill and condoms.....9 months later...It's a boy!!! Now I have a 9 month old boy and 22 month old boy... nothing is 100%, and this was after my husband had a vascetomy reversed after 12 years... so without birth control we only had a 5% chance of even concieving... so my little unplanned blessing was meant to be...

I never got pregnant on the pill. I think it is about 90% effictive, but you have to take them at the same time every day. Make sure you get a pill pack with a built in alarm or set your cell phone alarm daily.

it depends on the brand she is using. she should ask her ob/gyn on her specific brand.
also, my best friend was using a pill that said it was 99.9% and she took it at the same time everyday and still got pregnant. so i wouldn't depend on pills alone unless you are ready for a baby.
and the pull out method is not effective at all as pre-ejaculation has sperm in it as well.
