Thrift stores are a good place to but towels, curtains , bedding, kitchen stuff, as well as furniture. Be careful about buying large items because delivery costs a lot. If you have an Ikea it is a good place to buy items you Can't find second hand. You can buy foam 4 inches thick at store that sells fabric to sleep on until you get a bed. Then you can cut it up and make floor cushions to sit on around a coffee table. Cardboard boxes can be used for storage and even small tables. Good lighting can make a big difference, so some lamps should be an early purchase . A small TV is less than a $100 and will make being alone in bare apartment easier so it might be worth a spurge.

For the meantime, buy an inflatable matress at Target/Walmart/etc. It should cost you about $20 and you will get about a month or two of use out of it (you will need to add air every couple of days). Now that you have somewhere to sleep, shop around for the other things. Look at garage sales and second-hand stores and classifieds for furniture and electronics--cheap. You can also buy furniture at a one-year, no-interest place (try Rooms to Go and similar stores). Ask your relatives if they have any furniture that they arent using or would like to get rid of. Donations can never hurt! Also, don't forget to check Goodwill. There are many useful items there that you can use.

Save money on electronics. Avoid buying expensive electronics. Wait until you have saved the money before buying these.

Spend money on rugs, curtains, blankets and towels. Rugs and curtains will keep your apartment warmer in the winter so that you do not need to spend so much on electricity. They also make you feel more comfortable and at home. Blankets keep you warm and you can never have too many towels. Target and Walmart have all these products for cheap.

Go slowly. Buy the essentials and wait for everything else until you build up money.

go to the thrift shops and ask relatives if they have anything which they don't need either cheap or free. remember you are the one that needs stuff not them and don't expect to get everything you want for free or high end stuff. start small and work on getting what you need. also offer to work for stuff if you can. people like it better when you offer them something in return
