Tyler Durden was an alter ego for Edward Norton's nameless character in the movie.
it took control of him, but in the end, he regained that control, "killed" the alter ego, thus regaining his identity. of course, we have no idea if the gunshot wound out the side of his mouth killed him in the end... from bleeding to death or infection... but at that moment, his confidence in HIMSELF to take back his life overcame the power of his alter ego and therefore, Tyler died, and Eddie came out clean.

As far as I could see, Viktoria's answer, far from being stupid and lame as you had described it, is spot on. If you had watched the film, you would have seen that Tyler (Brad Pitt) doesn't really exist. He is the person that Edward always wished he was more like, he put these personality traits into Tyler and brought him to life. The whole 2nd half of the film is based on the slow realization that Tyler only exists in his own head, that the bruises and fight marks are self inflicted (you can see him beating himself up on the CCTV footage), that he was the one having sex with wasshername, not Tyler and that everywhere he went, people already new him as Tyler.
Shooting himself in the mouth and surviving is possible. It got rid of Tyler because he finally understood that he wasn't real and was the ultimate act of severance with an imaginary friend now that he realizes that the qualities he liked so much in Tyler, were in fact his own (as other people saw him).

Brad Pitt is Edward's imagination.He shot himself to kill Brad which is also imagination from his own world.

a contract with the Devil in that old German drama "Faust".

the element is Tyler Duran does no longer exist. The narrator ( Edward Norton) in easy terms invented him in his head and placed each and all the traits that he desires have been in him , in this character so he knew that with a view to kill him (Tyler Duran) he had to defeat his weak spot and posses those features that he has long needed so he shot himself.. with a view to respond to your question specific he did advise to shoot him and NO it replaced into no longer an twist of fate.

The film was changed from the book on this point. In the book the narrator (Norton's character) dies as well and you find the whole story has been retold from Heaven.

I know, I thought that was kinda wacky myself. I guess you have to remind yourself that it is a MOVIE and just go along with it. Other than that , it is an amazing movie.
