I'm sure different maker of tables have different ways of doing things, but I do know that the cue ball is SMALLER than the numbered balls. All of the tables that we use around my area have a hole that only the cue ball will fit down, and that is how they get separated. I've never seen a cue ball that was LARGER than a numbered ball, because that just wouldn't work.

The cue ball is slightly smaller than the other pool balls. There is a hole which returns this ball to you; it is just large enough for the cue ball to pass through but too small to allow any of the others to fall in.

i haven't encountered such a pool table like that yet. perhaps the one you encountered is a specialized one that can decipher a cue ball from the rest through its weight. unless there's a little green man inside the table operating it by hand.

I believe the cueball is a different size/weight that the other balls. The table can distinguish the difference and return the cueball every time.
