Weigh the sash, divide by 2 and take off about 5%, this will be the weight of each weight. a bit less than the sash so it stays down!

The weight of the complete window should be matched by the combined weights, but this can change!
I've noticed when refurbishing old 19th century sashes that the weights are often no longer heavy enough, and the sashes have a mind of their own. Sometimes I found additional lumps of lead have been tied onto the weights in an attempt to make them heavier. I think the explanation for this is that the original window glass was very thin and light, and had been replaced over time with thicker and therefore heavier modern glass, increasing the weight of the window.

weigh each sash with glass add 1 kilo for the top sash and divide by 2
subtract 1 kilo for the bottom sash and divide by two this gives the weights required for each sash.

As the friction forces against movement on each window is most likely to be different, trial and errror works best.
