Press Control alt and delete at the same time. Windows Task Manager comes up. You would then click on the processes tab and it will show whats running on the background. You have to know the name of the program in the process list to stop the process. If you do, just right click the process and select "end process"

Hmmm I see what you mean - Alt + Ctrl + Delete doesn't do the same on Window XP. You just get your user thingy coming up. But I think if there's a problem then the task manager thingy DOES come up - sure that's happened before... and from there cancel the program/process that's 'Not running'.

Sounds to me like you already know the answer. Press "CTRL" "ALT" and "Delete" at the same time.
Click on "Task Manager"
Click on "Processes" Tab
Move you highlight bar to the one you want to work with.
there is an button to kill a process at the bottom. Just be careful with this or bad things can happen.
