"Christmas" was originally a pagan holiday ("Saturnalia") that was "sponsored" by the Roman god Saturn, and celebrated the turning point in the Earth's solar year when we started to move away from winter and towards spring. It celebrated the beginning of a new cycle of growth, a "rebirth" of the earth's climate every year.
Early christians took the old tradition of Saturnalia and melded it with the idea of the birth of jesus, so that the "rebirth of the seasons" became the birth of jesus...and made the holiday their own. Despite what many people apparently think, even according to the bible jesus was NOT born in december, this is just a borrowed holiday. The bible isn't explicit about the date, but most religious scholars put jesus birth in the spring, sometime around april or may.

the Christian festival celebrating the birth of Jesus. The English term Christmas (“mass on Christ's day”) is of fairly recent origin. The earlier term Yule may have derived from the Germanic jol or the Anglo-Saxon geol, which referred to the feast of the winter solstice. The corresponding terms in other languages—Navidad in Spanish, Natale in Italian, Noël in French—all probably denote nativity. The German word Weihnachten denotes “hallowed night.” Since the early 20th century, Christmas has also been a secular family holiday, observed by Christians and non-Christians alike, devoid of Christian elements, and marked by an increasingly elaborate exchange of gifts. In this secular Christmas celebration, a mythical figure named Santa Claus plays the pivotal role...

What is Christmas?

The word Christmas comes from the words Cristes maesse, or "Christ's Mass." Christmas is the celebration of the birth of Jesus for members of the Christian religion. Most historians peg the first celebration of Christmas to Rome in 336 A.D.

Why do people give each other presents on Christmas day?
The tradition of gifts seems to have started with the gifts that the wise men (the Magi) brought to Jesus. As recounted in the Bible's book of Matthew, "On coming to the house they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshipped him. Then they presented him with gifts of gold, incense and myrrh."

Is December 25 really the day Jesus was born?
No one really knows. What is known is that Christian leaders in 336 A.D. set the date to December 25 in an attempt to eclipse a popular pagan holiday in Rome (Saturnalia) that celebrated the Winter Solstice. Originally, the celebration of Christmas involved a simple mass, but over time Christmas has replaced a number of other holidays in many other countries, and a large number of traditions have been absorbed into the celebration in the process.

Why is there a small evergreen tree in your living room?
This is a German tradition, started as early as 700 A.D. In the 1800s the tradition of a Christmas tree was widespread in Germany, then moved to England and then to America through Pennsylvanian German immigrants.

Why do you decorate it?
In Victorian times, people started decorating trees with candies and cakes hung with ribbon. In 1880, Woolworths first sold manufactured Christmas tree ornaments, and they caught on very quickly. Martin Luther, in the 16th century, is credited as being the first person to put candles on a tree, and the first electrically lighted Christmas tree appeared in 1882. Calvin Coolidge in 1923 ceremoniously lit the first outdoor tree at the White House, starting that long tradition.

I am not sure when exactly Christmas started, but in Christmas we celebrate the birth of Jesus, a kind and wonderful man who was born about 2,000 years ago. His teachings are about love, forgiveness, all men and women are equal, and so many other beautiful things. But his most important message is Love! that we must love one another, just like He and God love us. That is why Christmas is so special, as we celebrate the birth of Jesus, we celebrate love!

Christ's Mass. The Mass in celebration of the birth of Jesus. There is of course no proof or indication really, when Jesus was born.

The early Church, in the times of the Emperor Constantine, established the holiday at the time of the Roman holiday Saturnalia, which itself was set on the ancient winter solstice holiday. The Church wanted to get people to celebrate Jesus without feeling like they were giving up their fun.

That dude welltrav is exactly right. It;s orgin is Pagan that is why i do not celebrate it. Just because it was along time ago it does not erase the fact that is orgin is pagan and we know how God feels about Pagan. Any way the churches knew about where it came from but they did not want to lose all those ppl from coming to their church so they turned a blind eye. And aided with the so called cover up of this pagan holiday by calling it Jesus birthday the ppl could still come to their church if you do not believe this and what welltrav say's then go to the libary and look it up.
