How come in every Disney cartoon movie at least one of the parents is dead???

Nemo,
Beauty and the Beast,
Cinderella,
Snow White,
Hunchback (killed um both in that movie),
Lion King,
Alladin (Jasmine only had a Dad).

Is there a reason for this and does anyone elses children notice this also???

usually they're kind of rags to riches type stories, they rise above only having one parent (or none) and move on to do great things with their lives.....

I've heard discussions about this in the past. Only Sleeping Beauty, the kids from Peter Pan, and most recently the Incredibles had both their parents.

I've noticed that in most cases when there's only one parent around it creates a more close knit bond between parent and child. ie Jasmine and her father, Nemo and Marlin, Ariel and King Trident

When there's no parents around the character is forced to overcome whatever challenge alone.

In short, more drama. Better story telling value.

Kids can relate to the sadness for another child losing a parent. So Disney plays upon this emotion.

it's to better show the struggle that the main character has to go through (alladin had no parents in the first 2). my niece noticed it in a couple movies, but not all of them. it's more of a passive way to show the past struggles of the main character.

I have noticed this as well and while I don't have an answer, I find it disturbing! I guess this is Disney's way of trying to help us parents deal with death....I mean I have had to try and answer this question with my children. My kids noticed.

Wow!! I just noticed that!! If you have little ones at home...don't point it out! If it took me this long to realize it....it should take younger kids a while also!!

Disney doesn't have issues!!

I have noticed it. I actually wondered the same question for a while but then I realized it's probably for dramatic affects. To sympathize for the main character, I guess

In Sleeping Beauty she had both her parents, AND 3 little fairy godmother people.

I did notice as a child too! (you forgot Bambi, lol)

I think it makes for good story telling, dramatic/tragic pathos.
