The pain has been nearly unbearable through most of the pregnancy. No one, including her chiropractor, has heard of anything similar. Someone guessed that it was muscle tearing away from the rib cage. She's small in stature, and terrified this isn't going to go away even when the baby gets here.

I had this in my third trimester. My son was big and carried him very high, so his feet were nestled in my rib cage. It hurt so bad sometimes i couldnt get up from all the pain. i had huge black and blue bruises all around the lower center of my rib cage. I eased the pain abit by putting a hot water bottle on the bruising, i found it to help alot, some people recomend putting ice, but i preffered hot. the worst was when he would kick where all the bruising was!!
the day he dropped (i think i was 36 weeks) all that pain went away and i felt so good.

I had terrible pains in my ribs with my second child. It hurt so bad, sometimes like I couldn't even breathe. The baby would knock a rib out of place...and by the time I got to the doctor everything was back to normal again. It was weird like that. I was tiny when I had my first 2 and didn't have lots of extra room in there. Things went back to normal after I delivered. Good luck and congrats.

I think your midwife has a nerve limiting phonecalls like that. so much could happen in the interim. Get up and walk around. If it is gas, it will disperse. The ribcage does expand during pregnancy. This may be it. If I were still uncomfortable after moving around a bit, I definitely would make an emergency call. It's your baby. Think of baby first, and not the midwife's hours. Good luck to you.

I too had this problem,, it is where the baby is full term and you uterus has expanded to it's max, all her organs are in different places. My ribs had like a throbbing feeling, but after delivering it will all go away.
