G'day Ruby a,

Thank you for your question.

King Henry VIII is best known for having six wives and beheading two of them. However, he is best known in defence as one of the founders of the English navy. He made significant investments in shipbuilding most notably the Mary Rose, made significant naval innovations by installing cannons on ships and developed dockyards at Plymouth.

Due to his break with Rome over divorcing his first wife Catherine of Aragon, Henry VIII feared an attack from significant Catholic powers such as Spain. He strengthened existing coastal defences such as Dover Castle. He also built a chain of new 'castles' (in fact, large bastioned and garrisoned gun batteries) along Britain's southern coast from East Anglia to Cornwall, largely built of material gained from the demolition of monasteries. These were also known as Henry VIII's Device Forts.

King Henry VIII also brought about the union between England and Wales and dissolved the monasteries which provided much of the funding he used to strengthen the defence force.

I have attached sources for your references.

Regards

He was always scared of the French so he did build a fair few castles on the coastal regions to keep those nasty ol' Frenchies away.

He was also a bit scared of the Spanish - they weren't too happy with him over his shoddy treatment of his wife number 1 - Katherine of Aragon who was after all a Spanish princess and the aunt of the Spanish King. And when he broke with Rome the Pope basically charaged all Catholic countries to go and kick his **** as a heretic, so he had to keep looking over his shoulder for Spaniards as well. So he built castles for that reason too.

Thats about it I think.

so a strategies as a love for god is in contact, he became an fairly religious believer, properly knowledgeable interior the religion, and carefully committed to catholic doctrine. The pope, at an previously point, known this by the award ot the call Defender of the religion (Fidei Defensor in Latin, nonetheless on British money on the instant as F D or FID DEF). it extremely is why even however he broke with the pope just to get himself a divorce, the Church of england remained precisely comparable to it became previously till after he died. purely then ought to Archbishop Cranmer take it interior the protestant path he needed. that's greater good to argue his love for England as different than for all that, he seems to have lived completely for his very own excitement. One ought to argue that his dissolution of the monasteries, the sole different replace he made to the English church, contributed to England via confiscating their wealth, yet which may be incorrect as he frittered all of it away and died in debt.

There are lots of reasons, the main one is that Henry built a fleet of ships that no other country could match. As well, he created privateeers, the word was shortened afterwards to pirates, who basically raided the wealth off the main countries of Spain, Portugal and France. Therefore funding more ships.

People seem to get their history mixed up with HenryVIII - he may have broken with Rome but the Church was Catholic up until Henry's death. Although Henry set himself up as head of the English Church, he still regarded himself and his Church as Catholic and Catholic dogma prevailed.
