They came back to earth after a lucky run and crashed at 22nd place in the rankings where they should be.

If you are talking about the rules, well there is no automatic place for Euro winners in the World Cup. Therefore they had to qualify.
If you are talking about their playing, its simple...Their tactics just did not work during WC qualifying. Looking back at Euro 04, they got a few narrow 1-0 victories i.e. get the goal and defend like hell!! I am not bashing Greece, they beat my Czech team, so though it hurt i respect them...that's football. That can be all well and good for a knockout competition but during qualifying that just cannot work out in the long run.
I wish them well in Euro 08.

It's possible my friend. We don't have a good national league.Unlike your country here the football isn't good.I'm saying that my team Olumpiakos or the others like Panathinaikos or AEK or Paok or anyother team will never get the standards to be like Milan or Inter or Juventus or anyother team from your country. This has an impact on our national team. Most of the players of our national team play in other clubs in Europe far from Greece where the conditions are human. Here our stadiums except from Karaiskaki and Olympic stadium are so many years in bad shape. Our funs keep throwing objects every time their team is not playing good or looses. And the goverment do nothing to change the situation. Here everybody and i mean everybody wants to be a coach and no one leaves the real coach to do his job.One time all of them (not from the begining) left coach Otto do his job and all of Europe saw what Greeks can do.And of course the euro ended just one month before the Olympics started. It was the first time referees played 50-50 Greece in all our games.Winning was the biggest opportunity to advertise our country and the upcoming Olympic games. There was motivation and for the players to show that they were equal with any other player in europe. Most of them anyway.I know that this may look like noisense but our football in national level has nothing to do with our club level.Plus the "war" that every time we go to play against Albania which costed us our first 3 points and the equal result with Ukrain here in Greece. We can't be compared with you but i think you see there are a lot of things you take for granted in your country for football that there are not here.Sorry for talking too much but i said just the half of the reasons

as the European champions, GREECE didn't qualify directly to the 2006 FIFA World Cup finals as both tournaments were organized separately by different confederation. in the 2006 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, GREECE finished 4th behind UKRAINE, TURKEY & DENMARK. UKRAINE qualified as UEFA European Group 2 winners & TURKEY qualified for the European play-off which they lost to SWITZERLAND on away goals rule.

there is no link between the two, they are two different tournaments.
meaning the winner of euro2004 does not automatically qualify for the world cup and vice versa.
i might also add that the winners of both cups no longer automatically qualify for the next tournament- greece will not automatically qualify for euro2008 and italy will not automatically qualify for world cup 2010.
only the hosts of either tournaments get a 'bye' (automatic qualification) into the finals of the tournaments- meaning South Africa will enter into the finals of world cup 2010 and Austria and Switzerland will get a bye into the finals of euro2008.

Look ; in Greece everything is being done for the sake of money and interest, as everywhere ; but there is a delineating factor in it:
We are not professionals and we relay on luck and some momentums taking place all of a sudden. Greece won the Eu. cup because Olympics were held here and due to some...coinci dents!!!!
In Greece, we are lucking of an overall system, in living and in games, as well, due to our nature and some inner beliefs!
We perform miracles, when living abroad, but in the Country everything is a mess!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That's why, sort of....!
Ciao......John-John.

Shevchenko performs for ukraine so i admire them. i'm additionally a large England fan. Portugal beat England interior the international cup. And Italy gained the international cup. so as that merely leaves Spain. i do no longer think of they are going to qualify.
