The question is - how open-minded are we? Do we just agree with every issue in our party's platform?

Identify yourself with either a political party or philosophy - and give me ONE example of where you differ with your own party & think the other side actually has that ONE issue right.

Or....perhaps an issue on where you're willing to bend & arrive at a compromise for the sake of trying to bring this country together a little bit, rather than continually trying to wedge it apart.

For example, I'm a registered Democrat (although I'm probably further left-of-center than the average Democrat)....however, I do commend Bush's increased funding for the National Science Foundation and his support of NASA. I believe a lot of Democrats don't support NASA as much as Bush did because they see it as a waste of money - I disagree with this.

15 answers so far - and most of them have been EXCELLENT. Thank you for showing me that there ARE some people who post here who ARE open-minded - and willing to REALLY discuss issues. I believe there is always middle ground that can be reached....just imagine what this country would be like if REASONABLE people were in charge rather than people who are so bitter & hateful that they look at their fellow Americans as enemies rather than simply fellow citizens with a different point-of-view. The answerers so far have instilled some faith in me. Thank you.

As a Republican I do agree with the Dem's on same sex marr.

Science is beginning to conclude that sexuality is a biological orientation due to genetic prepositions at birth, and not (as many phys. and the Christian right suggest) a sexual preference due to a series of mental experiences. If people are born that way then to deny them access to a basic institution is, in my opinion but I believe factually, a civil rights violation.

Even if they're not born that way its still, again in my opinion, a civil liberties violation.

I also wish the Republicans were as vocal about the environment as the Dems, although some Dems take it too far, so that they can assert primacy as the nation's leading environmentalists.

Okay I will answer only because you are the first democrat in a long time that didn't call me stupid because I am a Republican. What do I agree with on the Democratic side? Abortion? Yes but not quite as unlimited on time as the democrats would have it. I remember the old days where all too often the mother either died or was unable to ever have children because of a back alley abortion. Where the democrats have it wrong in my opinion is in allowing abortions into the third trimester. Funding for the arts. I feel that we can do limited support for the arts but the artists renditions must be in keeping with the community's moral standards. ( I do not support an upside down Christ covered in human excrement) I think our country's biggest challenge right now is health care. I do not know if universal health care is the right way to go but I do know we need to look at other methods than the current one for medical payments. I think we also need to really look at social security. Roosevelt had a good idea here but somewhere along the way part of the equation was lost. SS was not meant to be a persons sole retirement income you were supposed to save and help support yourself, too often we, as a country, have not done this. After reading my own thoughts I know how much in the center I am still a conservative and still a Republican but very much in the center.

I am a registered Democrat, and frankly just slightly left of Lieberman. But there are several issues supported by the other side that I agree with.
For starters, I am with you on the support of NASA, for our future, I think he is doing the right thing.
I tend to support the Death Penalty when the case merits it. I do have some concerns about wrongful prosecution, found in a few cases, but understand that there is no such thing as a perfect world, and for the most part it makes more sense to me to put these types of offenders to death instead of spending the enormous resources to keep them alive.
I also support the Right Wings ideal of fiscal responsibility. My concern now, is that this was something that was once handled well and successfully by the party, and of late, it has not been accomplished.
For the most part on issues of abortion, education, healthcare, environment, etc, I tend to be very left, but am educated and open minded enough to look at both sides of the coin.
Thanks for asking a well thought out interesting question.

You ask a very difficult question. I am a traditionalist. Neither the Republicans or the Democrats represent my philosophy. I have to narrow it down to individuals, but even then have yet to find one person that satisfies all areas. I believe that Pres. Bush and the Republican party have failed concerning immigration problems. The Democrats have not done better. So I agree that both parties are leaving the citizens of this country at risk both physically and economically.

i actually like your question! human beings do certainly spend a strategies too lots time and ability on labels -- labeling themselves, labeling others, etc. i'm a male who has consistently been involved in adult males. That makes me gay. i do no longer, despite the fact that, ever flow out of my thank you to tell people who i'm gay. I not at all say, "hi, my call is _____ and that i'm gay." i think of human beings ought to easily stay their lives and pursue happiness as they see greater healthy, and enable others merely draw their very own conclusions approximately them. Frankly, i do no longer think of there is any such component as "the gay community" -- fairly once you witness how fairly rotten gay persons could be to one yet another over the main ridiculously petty issues. Who cares? My well-being care expert, lawyer, and different experts I hire are on the instant -- why on earth might I make their sexual orientation an argument via having purely a gay well-being care expert and a gay lawyer? Do i choose for their expert centers, or do i choose for to objective bedding them? the element i'm making is that i think no compulsion by any ability to stay fullyyt in "the gay community." I merely work together with all forms of people, and enable them to entice their very own conclusions approximately me. If I come upon somebody who seems to be anti-gay, I merely start up keeping off them -- i became born this way, so I certainly have no longer something to say sorry for or sense ashamed of.

I am a conservative and a long time member of the NRA. But I agree with the liberal view that there should be some form of gun control. What I disagree with is gun confiscation, and when liberals begin to take "control" to that point, I do dig in my heels because I don't subscribe to the theory that the only civilians that should have guns are bank robbers. I also definitely believe that there should be welfare for those unfortunate few who, through no fault of their own, are completely down and out. (Paying teen-age girls to make babies is not it!!)

OK, I'm a Republican (pretty far on the right) but one group of issues where I generally agree with liberals is environmentalism. I'm all for recycling -- we should be doing more of it, I'm all for vehicles that run on 100% ethanol and 100% biodiesel -- if the Big Three were smart they'd be putting most of their R&D efforts toward that, I'm all for stopping companies from polluting our waterways and cleaning up hazardous waste sites, I'm all for requiring the lumber companies to plant one tree for every tree they take down, and I'm all for reduction of greenhouse gas emissions (even though I'm not 100% convinced global warming is happening the way the doom-and-gloom environmentalists say it is). I also recognize the fact that it was the environmentalists who lobbied to get lead out of paint and gasoline, and as a result countless thousands of lives were saved from lead poisoning. Most Republicans see environmental causes as a waste of time and money. I disagree. Not only do I believe environmental causes are good for keeping our country "clean," they also create more jobs, which is always a good thing.

I am a democrat, I guess, I don't like labels. But I fully agree with the traditional republican ideology with fiscal issues. I believe in less government spending and more scrutiny with fiscal issues. I also believe in a lesser government. I think they should have less control over our lives and freedoms. This is also an old republican ideology, but it seems to be more of a Libertarian thought today. But on social issues I am mostly in line with democratic stances.

What a thoughtful question!

I'm what is probably considered a moderate Republican. I'll tow the party lines when it comes to fiscal issues. Here are some issues over which I am willing to bend: abortion, stem cell research and the environment.

I had never really thought about it before. You make a great point I am always backing these causes and then afterward wondering why I did so. I guess I really want to say and I know this will make me very unpopular abortion. I am pro life but most of the dems. I know are pro choice.

I agree with the democrats that all republicans must be out of govt.
I agree with the republicans that all democrats must be out of govt.

Wouldn't previous generations of Americans turn over in their graves if they could see the amount of corruption in both political parties..up to & including the president?
I am registered republican but vote the person not the party!
With the per centage of middle-class Americans getting so close to or below the poverty level I think the money spent on NASA could be put to better use....but then if it wasn't wasted on NASA our govt. would just give it to the illegals!
