I have to come up with a project idea for a class called "Food For Thought." Basically, we investigate the social consequences/implications of any and everything about food. Such involves the cause/increase in eating disorders, vegetarianism, the emergence of fast food, gender roles around the production, preparation and consumption of food etc. For the project, we are to research on practically anything about food and write a lengthy report later on.

Does anyone have any intereting ideas that I can research? I was originally going to do a piece on the hybridization of ethnic foods into the American culture (e.g. burritos), and how it represents the introduction of immigrants becoming full American citizens. But the teacher was worried the project would become too political, and less food-oriented. Any, and all, suggestions would be great:)

What about something on pros and cons of genetically modified foods. Ex. Grains which have been modified using gene splicing from peanuts cause allergic reactions in people who have never been allergic to those grains before, but are allergic to peanuts.

Its difficult to guess what some teachers find "too political" these days, but if yours finds this idea too political, I'd ask him (her?) if he is worried that his job may be jeopardized if someone higher up read a paper with any real or perceived "political" content. Here's my suggestion:
It stems from the recent e coli in spinach problem. Research how food gets from the farm to the table. I wasn't aware, for example, that Earthbound Farms spinach comes from many different source farms. I really believed there was an "Earthbound Farm" which produced all of their salad greens. I noticed that before the source of the e-coli was found (from feces from a nearby cattle farm contaminating the water) , that many people were blaming it on the immigrant farmworkers alleged lack of sanitation, etc. Talk about how problems with mass food distribution are driving people to buy from local farmers and produce their own food locally, and how this benefits communities.
