He's known as the Father of the Constitution because of his leadership at the Constitutional Convention. He had the idea of having two houses in the legislative branch and many of his ideas helped to form the Virginia Plan. This plan was used a a major building block for the Constitution. His plan for two houses helped to solve the argument over representation. The larger states wanted more representation, and the smaller states wanted equal representation. The two houses "the great compromise" was the end result. One with representatives based on population, and the other with equal representation from each state.
