Change the air filter if necessary. Make certain that the furnace front is clear of combustibles and let er rip. Some of the advice you're getting would be more in line for a professional service person., and not a home owner. Life is overcomplicated these days. Try to simplify matters and not fix things until they break. The need for furnace checks are exaggerated. There are so many safeties on furnaces these days that harmful incidents are a rarity. Heating contractors would just love you if you had your furnace checked annually. Relax.

Check for no flame rollout and good color flame
Check inducer
check wiring
Check all safeties
Vacuum unit
Check amp draw of motor
grease / oil where applicable
Change filter
Check T-stat operation
ensure gas valve functions
Check for gas leaks
Clean humidifeir and change pad
Check for Carbon Monoxide

I would at the very least replace your furnace filter, after that, maybe have someone come in and do a maintenace checkup on it.

change filter
change humidifier pad ( if so equipped )
for the heck of it vacuum out your return and supply registers
change your thermostat to a digital one pref. with programmable model (it will pay for itself over the season).
