It seems to stem from a basic feeling of insecurity which is fueled by, if not caused by, the positions we have adopted in our societies.

These positions often tell us that we are less than the truth in our hearts would suggest. However, because we are not in touch with our true selves we all too often accept that what society is saying is right and we are therefore wrong.

Our truth, nevertheless will not be silenced, and so an inner conflict arises which leads us into behaviours we know are not appropriate but which seem nonetheless to be unavoidable.

Nothing is more certain to engender a feeling of insecurity than having two life stories which are giving us messages which are diametrically opposed.

I think most people just want to be the best they can be, not necessarily better or superior than someone else. A person has pride, and ego that is satisfied when he feels accomplished about his abilities, knowledge and expertise. A person feels gratification when his/hers appearance is recognized as beautiful.Everyone likes the special attention his gifts or attributes attracts from other people.Who likes the feeling of being unaccomplished? Acceptance from others creates well being.

Because most people have never studied the completely adequate ancient Greek philosopher, Mediocrates.

He stressed that importance of the everyday, the mundane, was much greater than that of the exceptional. Sheer numbers proves it. There was a paradox, however, that he warned of. If you pay too much attention to being average, to appreciating the everyday, you make the everyday, the ordinary into something special. And if you've turned being average into being something special, you've destroyed the spiritual benefits of being average.

It is, basically, the contemplation of this paradox that can lead to enlightenment, says Mediocrates.

He stresses the middle of the road.

If I could see the beauty of the ashtray and its butts
If I could understand the truth of coffee cups,
If I could be happy earning grades of only Cs
At last I'd come to know you, great Mediocrates.
O' wisest Mediocates, at your alter I will pray,
Reveal to me your mysteries, teach me to love what's grey

Humankind doesn't think it is animal like, but trying to be superior is just one of our many animal habits/instincts. Just like in other species we want to look superior because that way we can use the weaknesses of others to cover up our own. So we can lead the pact in someway, and think we have some kind of control on our reality. It is just something that comes naturally.

I don't think most people are looking for the acceptance of others; I think they want to knock others down bc otherwise they won't feel good themselves. They can't feel good about themselves until they find something "wrong" with someone else. Most people are unkind. They don't care about others; they care about being better. They don't understand that everyone can be valuable and special and that someone else's gain is not your loss. To me those people seem superficial and weakminded and not worthy of my attention.

Maybe it's because people strive to improve themselves and to make a better life for themselves. I don't think this makes people superior to others, but maybe that's not what you are referring to.

Everyone is looking for value outside of themselves. We have lost our capability to know our own value without the input of those around us. Its called the lifeboat mentality. Read "Searching for God knows What" by Don Miller. He explains it very well.

Ahh perhaps you were paying attentin to history class.

When you are Number one (1), others are always trying to knock you out of first place.

History class for me:
Studying about one man who lead people to be Number 1.
Studying about another man who wanted to be number one so he attacked number 1.
Studying about more people being added to those who fight.

Pease for awhile and then someone else wants to knock #1 out of first place again...and again.

I don't remember any wars although they did take part or supported the country and children while men were off to war again!, or world wars that were started by women...hmmmmmm.....hmmm makes you think ehh?

If you know of one war started by women, please put it in your comment...I'd love to know!
