there r two types of circumcisions: male and female.
on religious grounds the male circumcision is done in two religions: Judaism and Islam. in this, the fore skin of the penis is removed. this is a small surgical procedure which is done so that men do not have the problem of uncontrolled semen fall. it is a health measure, but the religious justification is that, if the men can control the fall, it will not distract their minds from prayer to sex.
in the case of women, circumcision involves re-stitching the vigina. this is done usually after childbirth or after sex. the logic in African tribes where this is practiced, is to keep the women as virgins, and virginity mean difficulty in penetration, which can be achieved if the vigina can be shrunk again........

Circumcision (the removal of the foreskin sheath covering the head of a male penis) is still performed these days mostly at the request of the parents for religious reasons (a requirement of the Jewish faith, but also widely practiced in many Christian religions as well). Many doctors will make recommendations for/against this practice also based on religious beliefs or on what the prevailing sentiment in the scientific community is at the time.
There have been arguments stating that circumcision should be done to promote hygiene and lower the instances of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), but if male children are taught how to clean themselves properly, these arguments can generally be negated.
One thing to consider (at least if you are a man) is that the removal of the foreskin through circumcision has the potential to lessen the amount of sensation that area can feel during sexual intercourse. One can argue that reduced sensitivity equates to reduced pleasure. But then one could argue that reduced sensitiviity for the man means greater (or at least slightly longer) pleasure for their mate :-)
Personally, I am of the opinion that bodies in their overall design are generally perfect, and that the removal/alteration of body parts should only be done when there is a medical urgency to do so (plastic surgury is a whole separate debate :-)
Unfortunately in this case, parents make the decision up-front - and as you might expect, it's not reversible. So it should be encumbent upon them to get all the facts and choose wisely before altering their child's body (faith reasons aside).
If you want to see the history and biology surrrounding this, you can check out these links (but be aware they are graphic in their depictions):

It is a religious custom stemming from the Jewish faith in which the act of circumcision is a covenant between man and God. It is an agreement that the Israelite would forever put their faith in the one true God. This covenant is made by the cutting away of the foreskin of the penis. It has become a common practice in America to date.

It is the removal of foreskin that protects the glands of the penis.
It roles back to expose the glands when erect and ready for intercourse.
There is no reason to remove it unless for a medical condition perhaps if the skin does not role back as it should.
However many religions choose to circumcise their children at a very young age and without the option of choice.
Others choose circumcision for hygiene reasons thinking it to be unclean. If it is washed regularly there is no reason to think of the foreskin as unhygienic...

Depends or what you are trying to get at. It is a procedure that removes some of the foreskin of the Penis. It is a relatively safe procedure. I believe Prince Charles and sons have had it done to them. Some people get it for religious reasons. In the Jewish faith it is supposed to be removed at birth. Partly to do with tradition and because the foreskin is the last sheath that covers Jews from God. Hope that was of some help!!!

Jews Circumcised their offspring so that they were separate from the pagan nations around and it was a covenant made between Abraham and God. Muslims circumcise their offspring for the same reason!
Apparently circumcision is popular in the US because it's more hygienic not to have a foreskin than have one! There's a lot of bacterial growth under a foreskin!

Since animal sacrifices and stoning to death are not considered okay, i don't think it should be considered okay to mutilate children for religion.
I have a complete penis and haven't suffered any problems with it, ever, so I don't think health could be a reason.

It's when the foreskin of the penis is trimmed back.
As for the why, I believe it's a sanitation issue. Germs/bacteria could cause an infection of an uncircumsized penis by getting trapped in the folds of the foreskin.
