The short answer is that it takes a lot of work and a lot of patience.
1.) Submit the website address to free listing sites. http://submitexpress.com has a tool that submits it to a ton of free search engines.
2.) Make sure the page that has the content on it has lots of keywords. So... if you are selling a book on cooking, make sure the website has content like "cookbook" "cooking book" "books on cooking" etc. Repeat it as much as possible, while keeping the pages relavent.
3.) Make sure the website has meta tags (tags hidden from view that describe the site and have keywords)
4.) Make sure the img tags (hidden text behind pictures) all refer to the keywords.
5.) Get quality links from other related websites. You will actually be hurt by google if you get on these "free link" sites that carry unreleated links and content.
6.) Wait wait wait.

-There are plenty of people and services out there that can help, but be careful, a lot of them charge you a lot of cash for no results.

Hey, Wanderer was right with one exception -- you don't want to put just any links, make sure they are related to the topic(s) in your mom's book. Good luck. Google is the Mac Daddy of search engines.

I recommend your Mom buy a book titled "search engine optimization for dummies" This book explains in no nonsense language how to achieve your goal and I have benefited tremendously from what I learned from this book.

To get into Google, you need to fool the PageRank technology. According to PageRank, it prioritizes webpages based on the backlinks they have. So, try creating lots and lots of links to your webpage from outside. But this is really a very tedious work to do. Just try your luck.

If you'll share the web address, I'll take a look and see if there's anything wrong with the coding.
