"Hey man. I'm trying to get to to see my . I'm out of gas and low on cash... etc.?"

You can do 1 of 2 things.

1. You can give them money, with the faith that they are in that situation, or that they are lying with an arterial motive. If you at peace with the possibility that they could be doing something else than they represent, then go ahead and do it.

2. If you do not wish to give them money at all, create a philosophy such as this:

Part 1: Do not give money to anyone without consulting your wife/husband/etc. Just say, i am sorry, but i do not give any money away with consolation and consideration from my wife, and she does the same for me.

Part 2: If they persist, tell them there are resources available for people in their position. They look in the phone book under government services.

Not sure if this helps at all, but if you are prepared to not give, you will be able to not give.

Some may be genuine but most are not. I saw this one older lady near my old neighborhood who had one of those missionary signs. You know the one's that say that they are stranded and trying to get home. She's been around town for about 10 years now. I live in Texas, her sign said Oklahoma.....I think she could've walked home by now......

I sympathize, I offer food but I don't give them money.

Would you willingly putting drugs in an addicts' arm? Would you willingly give a drink to an alcoholic? If you give money to a beggar you are being an "enabler" and supporting a habit that they can't break. Politely say "No". Don't support crime, keep your money in your pocket.

Shake your head and walk away, if possible don't engage in eye contact and head for the relative safety of your car.

Cut them off and say no. Keep walking and don't even pay them any attention.
