They were hot during a good part of the season, but they really tailed off at the end. Apparently, they got pumped up for the playoffs. But consider this, they played the Padres, who in any other division, would have finished at least, third. Then, they faced the Mets, who never really got good pitching. The only good performance the Mets got was from Tom Glavine in game 1. Then, Oliver Perez delivered a decent games, but he only pitched 5 innings. So, the Mets relied on their bats and their bullpen. Result, they lost. The Cards had some inspired guys and guys who had something to prove.
The Tigers turned out to be morons after literally throwing the series away. The Cards deserved to win, no question about it.

As a long-time Cardinals fan, they most certainly deserved to win. The team had had many injuries throughout the season, and their no. 2 pitcher Muldar was hurt and out, as was their closer Isringhausen. Tony LaRussa did a masterful job of switching his line-ups, pitchers and players for defensive purposes, and many of the players, including the MVP Eckstein, played hurt. Edmonds had to take a shot in his foot to be able to play, and Pujols had a hamstring pull. That said, it did help that the Cardinal pitchers were superb, and the errors by the Detroit pitchers helped. The Cardinals did get hot at the right time, but they didn't win by luck--hard work and a team effort!!! Yeah!!!!!

They got both hot and lucky all at the same time... they got hot cause they out played the Tigers abd lucky cause the Tigers sucked. Just goes to show that it doesnt matter how many wins you have in a year. All that matters is what a team does when there in the World Series.

Absolutely deserved to win. It's not that they just got hot during the playoffs. They were on an unusual "cold streak" near the end of the regular season. But kicked it when it counted.
Look at this lineup - Pujols, Rolen, Edmonds, Carpenter, Molina, Eckstein, on and on. All great players just by themselves but any time one was struggling, the rest picked it up and covered for them. It was a TEAM effort. Which is what baseball is when it is at it's best.
Any pro player knows they haven't played baseball until they've played for the Cardinals.

Did you see the WS... This team played hard all nine innings each and every game, whether they were on top or trailing. To me that says alot for a team and as someone else mentioned , these players played hurt and in pain but they played the game. The Cardinals to me do not only play for themselves they play for their FANS!!!, so with that being said, this was a well deserved Win for the Cards because dedication and hard work always pays off in the end. Way to go Cards!!!!

Well lets see the Cardinals have Won 658 reg. season games since the year 2000,more than any other team,to get a World Championship to go with the great play is icing on the cake. So to answer your question is yes they did. They might of won more games in 04 or 05 but 06 is where they played the best when it counted the most.THE BIRDS ON THE BAT WORLD CHAMPIONS 06

Isn't that what happens EVERY post-season? One team gets hot and lucky... and wins it all.
Or did you always think that wild Card teams Like the Marlins (TWICE) the Red Sox, the Angels were the best teams ALL season long and just happened to NOT win their divisions?
The Twins in 1987 were NOT baseball's beast team. The Tigers were, but OOOOPS... they lost.
The Mets were the best team in Baseball in 1988, but someone forgot to tell the Dodgers that.
So... the answer to your question is "They were BOTH deserving and lucky."

The played a Mets team without their 1 and 2 pitcher which is 3-4 wins right there, and then they played a Tigers team that just fell apart. To me it was more beating a depleated, down on their luck team and then playing a team that just handed them games. But winning that way is still better than not winning or not even making the playoffs.

They played decent, but not stellar by any means. The Tigers did most of the work for them with all those errors and cold bats.
