I am a Canadian national, and I am currently living in London. I have just finished my MA in the UK. I will be starting another course in London in January, a PhD. My current student visa expires in Jan, I will be going to Canada mid-December and returning in January - I was wondering if I have all the proper forms can I apply for another student visa WITHIN the UK, or do I have to apply in Canada? Thanks!

You can apply within UK by using from FLR(S). Since you have travel plans, you'd better get the visa extension on premium service by visiting Immigration Office in Croydon. You will get your visa extended the same day provided you have the necessary documents. But it will set you back £500/- compared with £250/- for the postal service.

So many of the visa laws have changed in the last 6 months.
I'm a South African on Student Visa though, and I'll tell you what I know:
-You are allowed to do 1 (x 4 year Degree) + 2 (x 1 year certificate or diploma courses) on the Student Visa's, but they must all be related.
-You must apply before you're visa is due to end for the new one, but also remember, Airport staff dont often let people back into the country if there is less than 3 months left on their Visa, so dont only come back 1 month before you're visa is due to end, you wont get let back in.
-If you applied for you're current Student Visa before June 2006, you still fall under the law where you can apply for it in London. If you applied for you're current Visa after June 2006, you must apply for a new one back home.
But do inquire with visa attorney, because being Canadian you will have less restrictions than me, a South African.
Good Luck.
