I make gift baskets for the family. I get a small wicker basket from Garden Ridge (or similar store), fill the bottom with natural or green raffia, then I put in a small box of crackers, some cheeses (that don't need refigerating), bag of assorted nuts, and bake some fresh cookies. You could also add a coffee mug with some Swiss Miss chocolate packets, or Celestial Seasonings tea with some cinnamon sticks. If you want to get really fancy, you can get a large cellophane gift bag then tie it with a pull-bow.
For kids, get a pail and add some toys. This site has a gift basket for train lovers:

I began knitting scarves last month, and I should have my list completed by Thanksgiving week-end. I am not a real experienced knitter, but I can follow a scarf pattern. I observe the colors in clothes my friends & family members wear to inspire the yarns I choose. Everyone appreciates that I spent the time, and I usually spend no more than $10-15. This has enabled me to expand my gift list.

This is what I made for my grandmas:
I painted a flower pot except for the top part which you tie a ribbon around. Then take a styrofoam ball and cut it in half. Wrap it in cloth and stick inside the flower pot with the round part sticking out. Poke safety pins and needles into the styrofoam and you have a homemade pincussion. They loved it. I got it out of a magazine but I don't remember the title.

My favorite web site for crafts is www.HGTV.com or www.MarthaStewart.com. Both have allot of great ideas, patterns and instructions.
In the past years I have done knitted scarves, embellished picture frames using polymer clay, and candles that I dipped into hot water sprinkled with cinnamon( It makes the cinnamon stick to the candle) then wrapped them in raffia with a cinnamon stick and dried orange slices tied in.
This year I am cutting dried gourds into bowls and using the dremel tool to carve patterns on them. Then I will seal them with lacquer. For others, I am making small muslin sacks, stamping a Christmas theme on them and filling them with dry ingredients for flavored cocoas and coffees, then tying them with raffia and a tag describing what is inside and how to make it. That, I got from a book at my craft store that is full of recipes and even provides the tags with all the info to copy and use.
Hope this gives you some ideas.

A traditional one is to stick whole cloves into an unpeeled orange to make closet freshener. Make cool designs, but cover at least half the orange so it doesn't rot. Hang it to dry for at least two weeks before you give it somebody.

A cute gift to make for someone is a collage of pictures for them. Pictures of you and them...you know. It's a thoughtful present.
