Do the classic artists such as Marvin Gaye, Aretha Franklin, The Temptions, etc, stand up against the newer soul artists of the past 20 or so years?

not at all. Marvin Gaye, Aretha Franklin, The Temptions, etc was REAL soul music.

The Motown sound can blow these newbies out of the water any day. There are, however, some really good current artists out there. John Legend, Usher, Mary J. Blige, Musiq, Jill Scott, & India.Arie are some of my favorites.

Some of the new artists are very good, but I still prefer the classics. They're truly great.
