Does anybody know when an oven is described as having catalytic liners does that mean self cleaning?

Basically Yes! The oven will be lined with a [usually] grey metallic sheeting. The way it works is the material absorbs much more heat than the nominal temperature of the oven and burns off any splashes and stains. Most 'stains' within an oven will evaporate at temperatures about about 275C.

But there is no such thing as a self-clean oven in my life. All the other bits get filthy and the bottom of the oven and the inside of the glass need cleaning about once a month in my house

Catalytic ovens are not self cleaning in the normal sense. They do resist some of the grease and splashes that would normally require to be cleaned off in a conventional oven with enamel linings, but the catalytic liners only usually cover the two sides and the back, sometimes the roof as well. If you get them NEVER use oven cleaner on them or they will be destroyed! A 'real' self cleaning oven is one where you occasionally switch it to a special high temperature which burns off all the fatty residue and splashes, and you just need to brush out the ash!

I am not sure what a catalytic liner is but I can tell you that a self cleaning oven uses a lot of electricity when it is cleaning and you have to do some yourself anyway. I would look into that before buying one.

It may well say self clean but realistically the only way to have a clean oven is with a bit of elbow grease.

yes only just because it says self clean don't mean you don't get away with out cleaning it now and again

Nope. Only if it has a door lock and a "SELF CLEANING" cycle, is it self cleaning.
