telephone only hisses if the filter is plugged in

Sounds like it is safe to assume you are using a DSL connection? You may want to call your provider and have them check all your connections and maybe replace the filter.

If you are getting "noise" on the line it could be that the filter is bad. You can try another filter.
On filters ensure that any phone point were a phone device is plug into a phone socket has a filter!
If all this is fine, phone the provider they can test the line for faults.

the filter may be buggered. try without the filter or swap it with a new one.. :)

I had that problem and replaced the phone and it doesn't hiss anymore.

keep ur telephone away from ur modem and any other electrical radio device...even mobile phones cause interference...

it is ur phone line that is the problem call ur phone try with out ur net been connected see if ur line is same if not then call ur (isp)server asd ask them whaty it is like that or call ur phone compnay
