Dumbledore was often described as the greatest wizard of the age; he was an extremely powerful wizard that was highly gifted in Alchemy, Transfiguration, and Legilimency. He could cast spells without a wand, become invisible without a cloak, was able to see through Invisibility Cloaks, and could send messages with his Patronus. It has also been said that he was the "only one that Voldemort feared" so it would make sense that Harry Potter would be safer with him watching out for him.

Dumbledore was the Transfigurations Professor when he went to the Muggle orphanage to invite the then 11 year old Tom M. Riddle to attend Hogwarts. Voldemort revealed things in that meeting that Dumbledore has been able to use to against him since. Voldemort was able to impress and manipulate other professors into believing he was a wonderful guy, but he knew that he never fooled Dumbledore. That gave him a psychological advantage over Voldemort, who was also intimidated by his considerable knowledge, legendary skills (which included the Dark Arts, although he chose not to use them), and his incredible network for information gathering.

Becuase Dumbledore is the only person that Voldemort has ever feared. Now that Dumbledore is gone, Harry is not as safe at Hogwarts as he used to be.

well, he is a very powerful wizard. the whole school is safer when dumbledore is around. and D had many "helper" for harry... like Fawkes (whom i think still may play a huge part in book # 7, considering dumbledore would never just die without some kind of safeguards planned out in case of his death! i think fawkes is a part of dumbledore, and an analogy of a wizard who can come back from the ashes). remember in book #5, at the ministry of magic? the statues came to life and shielded harry...so dumbledore was capable of enchanting things to protect....

i wish they could all take felix felicious or whatever and kill all the deatheaters!
