The responses given thus far are a testament to misunderstanding of such words as "conservative," and its not reason that it often occurs. If one could step back and view it outside of these colorful terms (they're "crazy, insane, evil, etc") then it shouldn't be hard to see where an agency founded on the principle of minimal state interventionism and a modern day "conservative," advocate of strong federalism, minimized central government, etc, agree. The conflict usually arises when government action to push a social agenda overcomes this prima facie objection - so the problem is policy, not overall stated intent. So far as conservatism in ideology supports limited governmental intrusion on daily lives, the ACLU is very conservative (classical liberalist), and it takes a real and willful act of ignorance to deny that, regardless of the dynamics of each issue.

The headline of the ad is intentional irony, of course. Their point is that they are taking the traditional conservative role (opposition to change) and attempting to *conserve* civil liberties by opposing the Military Commissions act. The ACLU has taken some strange positions, but defending the right of Habeas Corpus is one I support.

They do exaggerate, agreed! But they are not really liberal. They aim to unbiasedly assail any violation of the U.S. Constitution, no matter how wacky it is. Like the Second Amendment right to "keep and bear arms." The Second Amendment is wacky in the context of today: people are not needed to form militias to secure "a free state." Ten soldiers and one tank could easily destroy all the militias in the United States (And these are the U.S. conventional ground weapons. We're not even talking about the high tech aerial weapons and nuclear weapons!!). The Second Amendment was written when the U.S. had no real military and scant financial resources (then far under .01% of the $419 billion being spent on the military today).
But, the ACLU calls itself "conservative" because it is intentionally unbiassed in its defense of the very flawed United States Constitution. Okay.

It's very hard to take seriously an organization that defends NAMBLA and attacks the Boy Scouts.

They have lost their "jelly bean" mind.
I'm just waiting for their "War on Christmas" to begin.
Don't 4 get to send that Christmas card to:
125 Broad St.
18th floor
New York, NY 10004
It's worth the 39 cents to freeze their operation, because they will be opening them all looking for a donation.
Send a nice religious one, like with the navity on it or something.
Who knows, maybe they will have a change of heart!!
Also, if you are Christian, why would you send a card with "Happy Holidays" on it? To a jewish friend, I send a jewish card, etc.....
