It's not okay. However, those that do so are using the Bible and the teachings of Joseph Smith (Mormon) to justify their actions. Because several of the main characters in the Bible had more than one wife they feel it's okay for them. They will even use the fact that many animals have harems in the wild so because man is an animal it's only "natural". People who practice polygamy are perverting the Bible and it's teachings to justify their desire to dominate others.

It is not ok for men in the United States to practice it. Mormons are sick and twisted and thier version of polygamy is more like organized rape than anything else.
However, IF hypothetically it were legal and ok for men to do it then it would not be ok for a woman because that would make her a slut. Men and women have different societal norms and guidelines. Just like a man should let a woman go first, hold a door open, give her his seat on the train/bus or pay for dinner and the date, a woman has a similar role to not be "used material".
Is there a double standard here? Yes.
Is there a double standard in favor of women in other situations? Absolutely.

It isn't I have no problem if women choose to practise polygamy. I have no problem if anybody decides to practise it. The people who complain that polygamy should be illegal and pass the laws to make it illegal are small petty individuals with low self esteem. With the world population the way it is with more women then men there would be lonely women on the planet that you have passed laws to prevent them from finding someone to live out their lives with. Now, after saying that I don't know how a men could take care of more then one women at a time and remain sain, but same goes for a women taking a mans greif. If it can be done, let them do it as long as no body gets hurt. Think about it ladies to men to fix the house, cut the lawn, working around the house, two incomes (as long as one isn't Mr. Mom).

The kinds of marriage/mating rituals that are accepted in any particular culture depend on a lot of things. In many ancient cultures, there were more men than women, and women were considered "property" instead of people, so the idea of polygamy was acceptable (it was also a measure of status, the more wives you had the more money you had to support them, so it showed how wealthy and prosperous you were).
Polygamy is still practiced in a few cultures, but much less than a few thousand years ago.
The of men with multiple partners really comes from our evolutionary past -- men and women really are different, you know :) A woman has to commit at least 9 months of pregnancy and many years of child-rearing to successfully pass on her genes -- a man only has to commit a few minutes of intercourse. Although it's in his best interest to insure the child he creates is born healthy and lives long enough to also reproduce, he's not bound to this physically as a woman is. With enough resources, it's certainly *possible* for a man to impregnate dozens of women at a time, and even support all those women and children materially. Our current culture frowns on this, deciding instead that it's best for a man to concentrate on one wife and set of children at a time, but that's purely a social construct.
Evolution is tougher on women, making them the bearers and nuturers of the children. Also, if a woman has many "husbands" (sexual partners), none of those partners can be sure any children she has have *his* genes, and so the already tenuous bond of the father is weakened further and none of them may stick around to provide material support.

It's actually illegal for men to practice it as well. I think it stems originally from the fact that we men have harems throughout most of the animal kingdom. Females prefer to mate with that one top male and males seek to mate with as many females as possible.
The more we distance ourselves from animals through the evolutionary chain, the more this behavior dies out and we cling to monogomy and what we see as civilized now. It is an old, antiquated style of marriage that is no longer accepted. But most women would not desire polygamy. You may and that's o.k.

Because in most societies men are dominate. I do not agree with Polygamy in any way, but in South america a tribe of women are the dominate ones and have more than one husband. ]
Polyandry
Polyandry is a mating practice where a woman has more than one male sexual partner simultaneously. Polyandry was traditionally practiced among nomadic Tibetans including Nepal and parts of China, where it meant that two or more brothers share the same wife. [1] It was widespread not just among the poor families, but also within the elite

It's not OK according to the law for anyone to practice it. In religion, usually the man is the leader of the house, and women are subserviant. It is just another example of a male dominated caste system.
