Historically, the Democratic Party has supported organized labour, ethnic minorities, and progressive reform. It tends to favour greater government intervention in the economy and to oppose government intervention in the private, noneconomic affairs of citizens. Basically the dems are for the little man/women not just the rich ones.
Dems tend to know the economy and social issues better then repubs who tend to ignore the above.
A liberal would say that a proper role for government is to regulate and oversee the economy. Liberals say it's proper for government to ensure that companies do the right thing (such as pay minimum wages), and to ensure that people act responsibly in their finances (such as requiring contributions to retirement savings).

Depends on the politician. Generally; pro-choice (abortion), some for gay marriage, against a war that has no bearings, for the good of the middle class and for helping the lower class. If your referencing this to voting, I would research the politician directly because they all have different beliefs.
