I have yet to see any cognitive studies that exhibit this old 'wise-man's' tale.

Hey Luggerbugs, the word rot is in quotes, not have an apostrophe. Rot here can mean: atrophy, degrade, reduction of neural connections, etc.

Hey Luggerbugs,
I have a BS in Psychology. The Psycho-Babble is common vernacular to me. If you don't understand something, then just ask.

TV doesn't neccescarily cause a "rotting" of the brain per se, but it does cause a dependancy on limbic system stimulation.
That's why you see an entire generation getting their rocks off when it comes to TV, videogames, etc....but they have no idea how to communicate effectively with another human being.
It doesn't rot anything, but television, video games, movies...all these things desensetize the person who gets inundated with this junk on a daily basis.
90% of TV for example is such a bunch of mindless negative crap anyway....Jerry Springer is a perfect example. Not only is that program completely senseless and trashy, but it's on at 9am where the children of ineffective parents can watch it. Great examples of maturity and communication there, let me tell you....and this sort of b.s. is commonplace in modern American society.
Now, if you watch informational television programs such as Discovery channel, travel channel, or History channel then great
for you....it's truly the only educational material left on American TV.
Our people are choked by negativity constantly and consistantly by the local hellavision. The news programs air 7 times more negative content than they do positive content because the ill crap sells. It sells because the subconscious mind is swimming in a bog of negativity, and in turn...it's much more responsive to it.
So yes, indirectly....TV does help to hinder the higher levels of thought process by feeding the mind with garbage.

Intelligence tells you it does.
Do you believe all the news you see? Do you realize who actually owns the news companies and who owns those and who owns those?
Do you think most TV shows are reality....that things just like that happen in reality?
Are cartoons being truthful to kids showing them laser beams from watches, flying, super powers? Doesn't this lead kids to believe they are super and can do anything and this causes them to get hurt?
Don't you realize that everything on TV is there to make money....real news, real life doesn't make money or we would all be rich.
So to sit and just watch TV all the time, over time the person believes all they see and hear as dead truth. They now have a serious warped version of what is really around them in the world.
Not to mention watching TV doesn't encourage the brain to exercise, think, work, problem solve, dream, etc. Too much of the brain in passive mode only results in a slow mind and thinking structure.
I would say that is rotting of the brain.

Good television does not rot the brain.
Bad television does.
Please note how 'rot' is spelled. It does not have an apostrophe.
Most American TV can be positively classed as 'Brain roting', but there are a few channels which are OK.
Remember the Pshco-Babble question ?
Here we have :- "........cognitive studies that exhibit this ........"

Depends on what you are watching. If you are watching the good channels....
Rotting our brain? Absolutely NOT.
Feeding our brain? Absolutely.
Especially with the programs that are on these day... I find television to be highly informative and even educational to people of all ages. Particularly Discovery Channel, TLC, Family and Food Channels etc.

no. television is a one way medium just as radio and books are. you can expose yourself to their influences but you can not interact with them. the internet is different in that you can be both exposed to and react and influence the medium.
sure you can watch bad programming that will do nothing to help you reach your full potential, but then thats your choice. you can also watch insightful, thought provoking content that stimulates you. think of all the poor children in south africa and bangladesh who watch sesame street and are exposed to educational material they wouldn't normally see because they are not in school.
television is one of the most powerful mediums of communication that we have developed, to damn it because folks are weak and don't use it to its full potential is silly. it could be so much better than it is, but thats not televisions fault, its ours.

i think it does - starve yourself of tv or internet/computer for a day or two - you will feel refreshed.
when you go back to these priviledges you see how nice they are.
at boarding school , i often went 3 month without tv - it felt good.
*for the record - i love tv now (what teenager doesnt?)
