polygamy or the practice of having more than one spouse is an abstract concept for most because most people in america are brought up with the idea that there is only one person out there for everybody. even though most people tend to be serial monogamists, i believe that humans are far from monogamous. just look at the statistics for failed marriage due to infidelity. you could spend a day reading through these questions on yahoo! answers to see that there is a lot of cheating going on and probably most of these people aren't even married.

opponents of polygamy talk about the division of love... trying to love more than one person at a time isn't possible without some kind of degradation in the emotion. this, of course, is not true as parents don't love their single child any less when another child is born. in christianity and judaism, polygamy is prohibited even though king solomon "epitomized the widespread recognition of (polygamy) throughout the entire ancient world".

advantages of polygamy over monogamy? think of the advantages of a large family over a small family. multiple incomes, financial stability, emotional support from more than one person, household support.

disadvantages? are they really any different than a monogamous marriage? except you might end up having more complex disagreements, but as long as everyone communicates well, there shouldn't be any major issues.

i think most people consider polyamory or polygamy as being all about sex and it's not. a connection between three or more people can be extremely powerful and unless you experience it, it's really difficult to fathom when you've been spoon fed your entire life that you're going to grow up and have this traditional family and traditional values... and especially now in this "morality pushing" government.

It should be up to the individual as long as all parties are of legal age and consent.

Advantage-More love, more people to help with the housework, more family to fight with at Thanksgiving.

Disadvantages-Sharing a sexual partner with several others and possible jealousy.

Nope, no way. the disadvantage is in the question. Having more than one spouse is the disadvantage.

There is not a man on the planet, hot enough to deserve two women, even Brad Pitt had to choose.
