I'm doing a research project on this. Is it still needed? Is it wrong to hire or not hire someone because of their skin color? Is it okay to discriminate against whites because some whites mistreated others? Does this make blacks feel undermined because they are simply filling a quota?

Affirmative action is a policy or a program which gives preference to a minority, or under-represented group of people with the stated goal of countering past or ongoing discrimination against them.

Affirmative action is the nation's most ambitious attempt to redress its long history of racial and sexual discrimination. But these days it seems to incite, rather than ease, the nation's internal divisions.

I truly believe that affirmative action was put in place with good intentions; however, it became something drastically unfortunate for those hired under those implications. I think that by today's standards, most companies are not even going with hiring the best person for the job - at least in Silicon Valley, it is a "Who you know" world with networking being a key factor in getting hired. The best qualified individual should ALWAYS get the job. I don't think affirmative action justifies that for the individual who was placed in that category. It fulfills quotas and really is not useful at all. It doesn't stop people from being a racist or prejudiced against others.

Affirmative action is a tool which is no longer required and serves not as an aid to minorities, but rather as a detriment. Progression should be gained by merit and skill not the color of ones skin. This is not 'reverse' discrimination as the media has come to call it. Discrimination is the favoring of one group over another, it can be present in any person regardless of race, creed or color. If you wish to succeed in a society such as that of America's then you need to realize you must take responsibility for your position in life and actively seek to better it through your own strength and determination.

Affirmative Action should never be in any type of buisness setting, just hire the best qualified person to do the job....Affirmative Action is just reverse discrimination.

usually people who income from affirmative action are in want of it, and white adult males are against it. human beings like to learn over others, elementary or otherwise. The inclusion of white women as a "minority" has consistently been a humorous tale to the different communities, in my own journey. regrettably, the government is fairly sluggish to decrease or end reward of any sort, so resistance is futile.

Affirmative Action is slowly becoming outdated, but still has limited usefulness. I think a person should be based on their abilities, not their color or religion. Everyone should be considered equal ... except gays and lesbos, they are sick!

It sucks. There was a Newsweek article awhile back about that issue in the workplace. It was titled "White, Male, and Worried."
