Polygamy, the practice of one man taking multiple wives, or Polyandry, the practice of one woman taking multiple husbands, is a practice that goes back thousands of years. Both can be called group marriages, but that does not make the group polyamorous.
In a group marriage one of the most important aspects is financial, how does the group raise enough funds to keep the whole thing together. If one spouse is making enough, there is no need to the others to work, but rather to run the household and raise the kids. Otherwise, multiple spouses work to provide for the whole.
Then there is the matter of love. Often times the main spouse will have two or more lovers (a primary and secondary(ies)) who may not also be lovers. If all love one another, you have a polyamourous relationship, and all share equally. Other hand if everyone is not similarly in love, you have your basic harem configuration. This is a little more trouble, but can work out just fine.
Oddly, these configurations of polygamy, polyandry and so on are not uncommon even though they are considered illegal. Why they are illegal is simply a reflection of current Judeo-Christian interpretation. There is nothing wrong with these groups if they can solve problems within the group.
The only disadvantages for group marriage are those that arise from insurance issues and issues of estate. The first can be solved using private insurance and the second can be solved by leaving clear probate instructions.
As for the legality of polygamy, I think you can be jailed for public lewdness, but beyond that, I do not see what they could really charge you with.
Personally, I have no problem with group marriages as long as they are civil and healthy. Limiting the way people group or marry is to me a crime.

So far, the only person I've ever seen who benefitted from polygamy was the man in charge of the polygamous family. You don't hear of women with a whole stable of men to support her, pleasure her, make sure her life runs smoothly, do you? I really don't think it should be allowed. It's a form of brainwashing that needs to be done away with.

No!!! If you look at the ones that have practiced it you find nothing but discourse, greed, none of the parties involved have any self worth and the biggest one it is illegal. If a man cannot afford to have one wife, how can he hope to be able to support multiple wives? Unless they all have incomes, there is no way a man could keep up with them. If you look at any instances recorded that had it you will find it did not work out as it was supposed to but was the destruction of the ones involved with it.

as long as its gone into by CONSENTING ADULTS I'm not against it
I wouldn't do it myself though
it would require special rules for taxes and publically funded social programs however, which may be cumbersome and expensive
