How do you read a pattern? Obviously I'm very new at this.

Is your pattern one of the Easy to Sew or Pattern For Dummies? These patterns are truly for beginners. Some patterns for pillows can sometimes be tricky. I'll give you the basic instructions on how to read one. Select the fabric you like and find out the width (36", 54" etc.). Choose the pillow you want to make, look at the back of the pattern package to see the yardage you will need. This section will also tell you the notions you will need IE: thread, trims etc. Now your set to go. Get the pattern sheet out and start reading from the very top, this area will give you some important information. After that, just continue as you are instructed. One very important thing you must do is to get the fabric "on grain" To do this, open the fabric up and lay it flat. At the finished end, come in about an inch, cut a snip and (YES) tear it to the other finished end.Won't tear to the other side? Move down a little further, and tear again. Do this until the fabric tears from one finished end (salvage edge) to the other. Once you accomplish this, your on grain. I hope I was clear and helpful. Happy sewing.
