The engine light being on means that there is something wrong with your engine, exhaust system or fuel system. Could be anything from a tune up being due to having to replace components in your exhaust or fuel system. It could be minor or serious. The only way to know is to take it to a repair shop so that it can be evaluated and proper repairs can be made. Do this as soon as possible so the problem doesn't get any worse.

In other words, your system has tripped a code. You will need a code scanner to see exactly what code was tripped. Shops have this ability. Usually they will charge a diagnostic fee and waive that fee if you have them repair the vehicle. That is a general thing I see, not the rule. Ask first.

Now, what it means to you. If you have to have your vehicle's emissions inspected in order to get a tag, you probably won't pass next time around. It's possible but very doubtful If ti were OBD 2 youd would not pass for sure.

Is there any driveability concern or just the light on? It could be something like a heater circuit in the O2 sensor or as simple as an evap code from you not putting the gas cap back on securly of a faulty gas cap seal.

Take it to a dealer. Your car was produced before 1996 and alot of auto parts stores only have OBDII scanners for 1996 or later models. A dealer would have the right plug in scanner for your car. It will tell them what code the computer is seeing, what it means, and what part needs to be replaced to make the problem go away.
Or It could just mean that there is a recommended service interval in mileage that has past due. Like at 60,000 miles your owners manual may indicate that you need..... Brakes checked, belts and hoses. Maybe a timing belt replacement needs to be done soon to protect your car from being damaged if the belt breaks and so on. It may be nothing and might just have to be reset by the dealer. The only way to tell what it means is to get it hooked up to a scanner!!!! No one can tell you what they think your engine light is on for in Yahoo answers.

The `engine` light comes on for very good reasons! There are several sources which will activate the eng. light. Coolant temp. and level. Oil preassure, temp. + level. What do your guages say when the light comes on? Personally; if my `eng.` light comes on, I pull over; quickly scan the guages and shut it down! Then I lift the hood and check all the fluids. It could just be a faulty sending unit but it`s not worth risking an engine! untill you do an oil preassure test. Once you`re satisfied that all`s well then disconnect the battery for a min. or two and the `eng.` light should switch off. Again! do not treat the eng. light as an annoyance. It could cost you big $. Good luck.

The light is telling you that it is time to take the car in for service. nothing is seriously wrong so make an appointment and the light will be turned off by the service person when they check the car.
