If you have a set of twins...we'll say male twins...and they each have a child, and the children have the same mother, are they, genetically speaking, full siblings? Even thought they have different fathers, their father's have the same dna, right? So is there any way to set them apart genetically?? I know on paper they'd be half siblings, but, I want to know genetically speaking, if they are full siblings...this question has been tormenting me...any help would be greatly appreciated=)

I'm sorry, yes, I meant identical twins.

Okay, if the twins came from the same zygote (monozygotic twins, aka 'identical twins) then they would be just about identical with respect to their DNA, but not completely. There will be at least a handful of differences due to mutations, and also they will both have different genomic imprinting, which is a sort of DNA modification process that doesn't actually alter the DNA sequence, but alters the way the sequence is expressed.

Then if these (nearly) identical twins had sons via the same woman, yes, their sons would be just about as genetically similar to each other as normal siblings; just about! This doesn't mean the siblings would be identical, however! They'd be related in the same way as normal brothers, nearly. This means they'd share about 50% of the exact same genes (because they each will have gotten different combinations of their mom's and dad's genes).

You'd have to look very closely at their DNA to see evidence that they didn't have the same father. For instance, one of the fathers may have had a mutation in his Y chromosome, which then would have been passed to his son. The other child would not have that same mutation, and had they been full sibilings they would both have had it.

If the twin fathers are identical, then yes, in that scenario the kids would be genetically the same as full siblings.

Most types of twins are not genetically identical. Fraternal twins are the most common, and indeed have significantly different DNA. Identical twins; howver, do have identical DNA and cannot be distinguished from one another genetically.

The question you did not answer is are they identical twins? if so then their DNA is identical. If they are fraternal twins then their DNA is as different as any 2 brothers.Even identical twins start being different from the time they are conceived, but their DNA does not change.

Not a problem. Just paint a big red "X" on one twins right hand and a big red "X" on the other's left hand and then, all you have to do is look to see if the big red "X" is on the right hand or the left hand and you'll know which one you're dealing with. Simple....but then, I did complete the 6th grade--after only 9 years!
