I am breastfeeding my 4 day old baby boy. My milk has come in great. I am not sure if I should be avoiding certain foods. Mothers can you help me? What foods, if any do I avoid when breastfeeding? Is some caffeine okay? I can't go a day without my diet coke.

Looks like the amount of caffiene in five or fewer cups of coffee a day is okay.
I personally drink about 2 cups of coffee a day on average and have had no problems with my 5 1/2 month old.

I always check La Leche League with my questions and I haven't been disappointed yet. I've listed the link below.

I breast fed all 3 of my babies. Foods that are highly acidic like tomatoes can alter the taste of your milk. These should be limited. As far as I know caffeine will transfer through your milk, so keep it at a minimum. I drank at least one coke a day also.
My advise, read up to learn important do's and don'ts, then relax and just enjoy mothering! Don't sweat the small stuff. Enjoy your new little blessing!!

Congratulations! As you may have heard, what foods you eat can affect the flavor of your milk. Most lactation consultants will tell you to avoid overly spicy foods, foods that give YOU gas (if it gives you gas, it is better to assume it will give your baby gas as well), alcohol, and too much caffiene. My lactation consultant said that I could have 20 ounces or less of drinks with caffiene in them. But the best rule of thumb is to just observe how your baby reacts to the foods you eat. Generally, it takes 6-12 hours for what you eat & drink to pass to your milk. So if your baby is extremely fussy after a feeding, it could be something that you ate. If you don't already have a lactation consultant, you can find one by going to www.medela.com. This is a company that makes in my opion the best breast pumps, but they also have resources on thier site so you can find lactation consultants. Best of luck!

Don't drink the diet Coke. The diet stuff has worse stuff in then the regular pop does. I would get a list from your doctor about what stuff you can't have while you are breastfeeding.
