I am almost anal about reducing clutter in my house. I am far to organized - but I love the process and the end result.

A few tips for you follow:
a) only touch "things" once (like mail) - put it where it goes or throw it away NOW.
b) clothes - If I didn't wear them last season - donate them or have a yard sale
c) Lable - Lable - Lable file folders or whatever. If you do not have a filing cabinet - buy some large manilla envelopes and lable them. You can cut off one side of it & leave it opened to file things in. Lable as: Medical, Insurance, Home info, Phone #s etc etc
d) Baskets & plastic storage baskets. I use them everywhere! Wal-Mart has them very cheap! I use them in my refrig even for jellies, relishes, lunchmeat etc. In my cabinets for spices (just write on the top of the spice lid what it is so you can tell without going thru all of them); There are long ones that you can store sugar, flour, can goods etc in.
e) Dishes - keep one set & discard the others.

Life is much easier & so much more relaxed when you get in the habit of making this work for you.
Good luck!

I do the flylady.net thing and it is wonderful. There are all kinds of wonderful hints and tips they send you too. I say the same if you haven't used in a year let go, and the whole nick-knack thing, only keep if you really love it. I know they all have sentimental value.

If they are really special but you really don't want to keep anymore, take a picture of it and put it in a scrap book or photo album that way you can always look in there and find cherished memories.

Hope this helps

i like to use a very easy declutter plan once a year. if you havent used it in the past year, get rid of it. also keep in mind " can someone else need this more than me? if so donate it to the needy

Flylady.net is good, they tell you all the time to find 27 items and toss them.

Yard sales are good, plus you get extra cash!

Just take 15 minutes to go through stuff and let go of those old clothes and knick-knacks.

There's Salvation Army, Goodwill.

Oh, and the best if you don't care about the cash, Yahoo Freecycle groups. People just come and take stuff from your doorstep.

I hope you get a lot of good answers on this. I'm the same age and have not only my collection, but my mother's that I inherited. Luckily, I have a daughter who is overly compulsive about neatness, so she comes over once a week and tries to get me organized or get me to throw things out.

I have the same problem. I'm going to get furniture w/ lots of drawers and organize everything. I have so much wrapping paper and ribbon I could start my own store. Plastic storage boxes and stack them one on top of the other in the closet?
