I've considered moving here because my boyfriend lives there, and the commute is a headache. So far, when I'm up there, it's seems to be an alright area. But, as close as it is to Gary, I wonder if I should be leery about living up there. If anyone lives in this area, and can tell me how safe they feel on a normal basis, Thanks for any help!

I personal don't live in Lake Station but I've lived in both Gary and Merriville. I moved to Valparaiso its about 20 mins or less to get to lake station I guess its kinda the area you choose in lake station. Some of lake station is very close to gary and lake etta which they are some pretty bad parts. But for safe I guess its okay not too safe but cheaper on rent. A place close to lake station that isn't totally bad is hobart.

I lived in Lake Station mostly my whole life. Like the person above me there are some bad parts of Lake Station, but what city doesn't have bad parts. Nothing bad has every happened to me, but I did live in Hobart before(when I was in grade school) well I would get picked on all the time and one time people chased me home threaten to beat me. Here in Lake Station that has never happened. The only bad part in Lake Station is near the 7 Elephants on Dekalb st to Columus park on Clay st. I've walked the streets from early in the morning to late at night and no one has every tried to mug me or anything. I think Lake Station is pretty safe.
