There have always been loads of swans swimming on the canal running through the city centre. When I was younger, I was told that if the swans fly away and don't return, bad luck will befall the city of Lincoln. How did this tale come about? Has anyone else heard the same story/ myth/ old wives tale?

Probably because the tourists won't find sitting by the river so picturesque. There is something about watching swans doing what they do so majestically that makes you relax and stop and stare- and then be happy to spend money.
Lincoln wouldn't be the same without them though. Is it a canal? I always thought it was part of the River Witham. I learn something every day on Answers!!!

It means there are no fish and the river is polluted to fekk.
When that constituted the city's water supply, I'd say it would mean bad luck eh?
