Oxbows happen when the terrain is fairly level and the water in the river runs slowly . Oxbows are formed when the river winds slowly left and right , and silt builds up behind the bend to often form a sandy beach. Sometimes a break through will occur and then a small island is formed in the middle of the river which used to be the oxbow.

basically oxbow lakes form in the middle/lower course of a river, when the river is meandering across the flood plain to use up excess energy. as it meanders from side to side, the fastest flow is directed towards the outside of the meander bend, and material is deposited on the inside bend where the flow is slower. the river meanders more and more vigourously until the river misses out the bend and cuts straight through, forming a straight channel. material is deposited at the start and finish of the C shaped bend that is left behind, isolating it from the main river channel. this is an oxbow lake.

Oxbows are caused by the loops of meanders being cut off at times of flood and the river changing its route so that it flows along a shorter course.

Small lake located in a former meander loop of a river or stream channel. It is generally formed as a river cuts through a meander neck to shorten its course, blocks off the old channel, and then migrates away from the lake. If only one loop is cut off, the lake is crescent-shaped; if more than one loop is cut off, the lake is serpentine (winding). Eventually, oxbow lakes silt up to form marshes and finally meander scars.

AN OXBOW IS CREATED WHEN BEND IN THE RIVER HAS ITS OUTSIDE BANK ERODED SO MUCH THAT IT MEETS THE RIVER AGAIN IN A STRAIGHT LINE.
SEDIMENT WILL BE DEPOSITED INTO THE BEND UNTIL IT IS CUT OF FROM THE RIVER FORMING AN OXBOW LAKE
