Much is for distribution of brain chemical oxygen nutrients etc, some of it more than you think lol is used for maintaining metabolism of the body and not specifically involving the thinking process as is thought of. Some of it is structural also like the corpus callosom engineered like the function of a trunk or stem of a tree. The outer grey matter can be likened to bark.

Now the ventricles of the brain have free space but they are filled with cerebrospinal fluid used in transporting neurotransmitters.

The oft-quoted "we only use 10% of our brains" is completely wrong. Using MRI scanning, numerous studies have watched people's brains in action as they eat, sleep, think, watch TV, do homework, etc. Most of the time 70-80% of your brain is active, often more than that. While there are "centers" in your brain that mainly handle certain tasks, the reality is that your brain distributes the processing of information it receives over many parts, and when learning or recalling from memory are involved, nearly the entire brain gets used.
The "10%" thing is an old wives' tale.

I think it could be used...
However, think of all the functions our bodies complete without a concrete thought to preform them. Your subconscious controls things like breathing, blinking, digesting, and even your heart beat. It contributes to dreams, memories, and also acts as a "receptionist" for all five of your senses. Pretty amazing. Did you know that when your body feels pain... for example: a burn on the edge of a pot.... your body will react more out of reflex than a coherent thought that says "This hurts."

I think the 90% could be accounted for in that way.... But, I could also be wrong... if I am, sweet. If not, sweet also. Have fun working it out.
